In Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, on the Indus River, the city of Chilas serves as the divisional capital of the Diamer District. It is a part of the Silk Road and is connected to Peshawar and Islamabad in the southwest via the Hazara and Malakand Divisions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by the Karakoram Highway and N-90 National Highway. Through Gilgit, Aliabad, Sust, and the Khunjerab Pass, Chilas is connected to the Chinese cities of Tashkurgan and Kashgar in Xinjiang in the north.
Gilgit-Baltistan includes Chilas. It serves as District Diamirs administrative centre. (2 August 2012, Pamir Times) The summers are hot and dry, and the winters are chilly and dry. Chilas and its neighbours are more like Indus Kohistan in character while being administratively grouped with Gilgit; this is likely due to a similarly inhospitable environment and the same Sunni Muslim orthodoxy. A Sufi Muslim from the Kaghan valley named Syed Noor Shah, also known as Ghazi Baba, was the first person to start teaching Islam in Thak and he also built the first mosque, which is still standing. His descendants were converted to Islam by him (though some changes have been made). The Syed dynasty of Kaghan was the lineage of Ghazi Baba. Islam arrived in Tangir and Darel from the Swat region. In contrast, very few people in the Gilgit-Baltistan province north of Chilas are Sunnis. The huge Chilas Fort was first manned to guard British supply routes across the Babusar Pass, and it was reinforced after nearby tribes came dangerously close to taking it in 1893. It has kept Chilas under control, but not the Darel and Tangir Valleys to the west. It is now a police post.
